Monday 12 – Friday 16 January 2026
Bridging digital and traditional art-making, we journey from the basics of Procreate on iPad, to expressive mixed media drawings and paintings. You’ll explore the fundamental Procreate tools; getting started, brushes, layering, colour, working with photos, saving, and sharing your work. We work from life and reference images to develop ideas and digital sketches in Procreate.
We’ll then transition to working on paper and canvas with acrylics and mixed media, transforming your digital impressions into bold, expressive artworks. You’ll be encouraged to experiment, loosen up, and explore your own ways of working from Procreate to paint.
Most suitable for those with little or no iPad and Procreate experience and some painting experience. Best suited to artists wanting to explore free, experimental, and non-traditional art making approaches. We will also explore iPad as a creative exploration tool during the development of your paintings, particularly fine tuning at the end of the painting process. All levels

Over the past 40 years Paul Macklin has made an exploratory journey from drawing to painting and from representation to abstraction. His creative path is rich with joy, struggle and discovery. His workshops shine light on the key practical and creative insights of Paul’s approach and give students pathways to build their own creative approach as a foundation for stronger, more expressive art-making.
Much of Paul’s work is inspired by his annual pilgrimages to the Hawkesbury and Arkaroola and the colours, architecture and spirit of the Australian desert. In recent years, he has embraced the iPad and Procreate as powerful tools within his creative practice, bridging digital sketching and traditional painting. Paul exhibits and works from the Art Farm Gallery and Bloomfield Fine Art on the NSW Central Coast.
