Sam has been involved in a wide range of art and design since graduating in Fine Art from the National Gallery School (Victoria). After many years running his own design studio and teaching graphics and printmaking at University and TAFE, Sam’s focus is now on his printmaking practice. In 2012 Sam visited Japan and studied Japanese woodblock techniques (Mokuhanga) with Richard Steiner in Kyoto. A solo Japanese inspired show in Byron Bay followed a year later. Sam has recently developed his lithographic printmaking moving from stone to “Wood Lithography” – Mokulito.

MOKULITO PRINTING This exciting two day course will introduce you to the Mokulito process. Mokulito can be described as “kitchen lithography”. It combines wood block printing with lithography but uses everyday non-toxic and inexpensive materials. One can get the sharp lines of wood cutting with the softer and expressive tones possible in lithography. It is an inexpensive and portable medium that has surprising and creative results. JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINTING Learn the traditional steps for producing a Japanese wood block print. This 4 day workshop will cover history, basic elements of designing your print, using Japanese tools, sharpening tools, mixing water based colours and printing using a baren and different varieties of Japanese papers.
