In this workshop you will be guided through the process of designing your own blackwork embroidered portrait, derived from a photograph of your choice. Incorporating design development, pattern transfer, and blackwork embroidery skills, this workshop will culminate in an experimental approach to finishing techniques drawing upon a range of embellishing embroidery traditions. Sera Waters is an artist living on Kaurna Country, South Australia. Since being awarded a Ruth Tuck Scholarship in 2006 to study hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework (UK), Waters’ art practice has been characterised by a darkly stitched meticulousness. She exhibits her textile artworks nationally and internationally, notably including the 2022 Busan Biennale: We, on the Rising Wave, South Korea. Her works are held in numerous collections including Artbank, Cruther’s Collection of Womens Art, Ararat Regional Gallery, Powerhouse, the Australian War Memorial. She lectures at Adelaide Central School of Art and is represented by Hugo Michell Gallery.
