Take a journey into the ancient craft of basketry - with a twist! Use recycled wires from telephone, data cabling and electrical wires. Create small decorative objects – baskets, embellishments, sculptural pieces or jewellery. Work using traditional skills and techniques as you are guided into a world of knots, twists, coils and more.

Discover and expand upon the skills of basketry using natural materials. Learn the tricks, tips and challenges of this ancient craft, particularly the “god's eye” which is the signature of a melon basket. Understand form and structure, handles etc. Make your own basket from scratch using nature’s discarded bounty. Learn about collecting, suitability, storage and preparation of materials, the physics of framing and form.

Lee Cole lives in Hobart, Tasmania and is a seventh generation basketmaker. His work is broad and varied from the traditional through to contemporary practice.
​
He has more than 37 years’ experience as a teacher and arts administrator at state and national levels. A regular tutor at local workshops, state and national basketry gatherings, he willingly shares this broad knowledge of techniques and methods across all aspects of the basketmaking art form from functional and practical projects through to larger sculptural work.

Lee’s current focus is based around creating pieces from found, natural and recycled materials, augmenting this with smaller elements and contemporary fibres.
