Joy adopts an improvisational approach to hand embroidery to unravel inner feelings and tensions that concern her as an ageing woman. The notion of stitching into unknown emotional territories has moved Joy away from planning and clear outcomes. Rather, she places trust in needle and thread to guide her through the mystery of making: a creative head space where it is impossible to predict what comes next. This is what Joy understands as an improvisational stitch practice.
