INTRODUCTION TO SPINNING: A BEGINNER'S TASTER Participants will learn the fundamentals of transforming local fleece into yarn using a spinning wheel. Topics will include wheel setup, fibre preparation, drafting, controlling twist, and creating your first hand-spun yarn. Students may bring their own spinning wheel if they have one. A limited number of workshop wheels (six available) will be provided for participants who do not have access to a wheel. This relaxed and supportive workshop offers the perfect opportunity to discover the craft of hand spinning and decide whether it is something you would like to pursue further. BUILDING ON TRADITIONAL SPINNING – SOLD OUT! if you would like to go on the waiting list please add your email below and click 'ADD TO WAITING LIST' This workshop is designed for experienced hand spinners who are confident in operating their own spinning wheel and have a solid understanding of basic spinning techniques. Participants are required to bring a well-maintained spinning wheel and should be comfortable with wheel adjustments, drafting, and plying. Students will explore a range of creative spinning approaches, focusing on the development of practical art yarns and single-ply yarns. Techniques will include different drafting methods to enhance loft and overall length of spun yarn to fibre weight. Alternative processing techniques will be applied to spinning singles, that result in stable and robust yarns. Students will also explore thick-and-thin yarns, spiral yarns, beehives, and core-spun yarns, finishing with lock spinning, often referred to as tail spinning. The emphasis of the workshop is on a gentle practical approach to experimentation and creativity, along with expanding technical skills that will benefit your everyday spinning in the future.
