Working with dye plants and extracts from all around the world, including madder root, weld flowers, logwood, sappanwood, marigold, cochineal, pomegranate, gallnut and natural indigo. Gain practical experience in mordanting cellulose fibres, modifying colours with mineral salts, creating tonal variations, and layering dyes to produce unique shades of beautiful long lasting colour. Heather runs a natural dye studio Wild Heather located just out of Melbourne. She collaborates with a range of artists, design studios and clothing labels to naturally dye their various projects. Since 2023 Heather has worked in the colour laboratory at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, dyeing yarn with both chemical and natural dyes. In 2019 Heather was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to investigate established botanical dye studios in Japan and America to see how such models may be translated locally.
