Learn and explore the creative and functional possibilities of paper textiles through the traditional Japanese and Korean crafts of Momigami, Kami-ito, Shifu, Joomchi and Jiseung. Use the traditional Japanese dyes – indigo and kakishibu (fermented green persimmon) - to introduce colour to your paper textiles and gain an understanding of design and construction techniques developed and adapted for paper textiles. From durable textured paper cloth to paper cord and thread, learn the foundations of each technique and apply them in small artworks, then use your new paper textile skills to create an artwork of your choice. Anzara Clark is an artist/designer combining traditional craft and contemporary experimental approaches; stretching the limits and intersections of paper, fibre manipulation, and textile processes. Her work interrogates assumptions about paper as a material and vehicle for textile artworks, garments, and functional accessories. Influenced by Japanese artisanal heritage and committed to the preservation of rare craft knowledge, Anzara’s studio practice and teaching focus on sustainable contemporary applications of traditional paper textile crafts. She has shown wearable paper couture collections in Australia, Italy, Canada and Indonesia and has published Paper As Textile, a comprehensive learning resource for creating and using paper textiles.
